Celebrity guests were retained in the new format (once again aiding the contestants) and performing the solo stunt as well as "co-judge" with Wood in the final stunt of the day. The only change in the format were that the couples were introduced separately and played two stunts, win or lose (a win still getting a trip to the cash board) and both couples competed simultaneously in a final stunt with the winning couple receiving a prize. Like his predecessor, Wood also wore suit jackets with the show's logo sewn on the pockets. The show was now called The New Beat the Clock (although the logo still read simply Beat the Clock) and the set was refreshed with a new color scheme and a redesigned clock. CFCF-TV Montreal staff announcer Nick Hollinrake became the show's announcer he had previously announced for a week during Narz's final season in which Wood was the celebrity guest. Wood had also been hosting a similar stunt game for CTV titled Anything You Can Do. His travel costs were essentially equal to his earnings, and even a successful appeal to Mark Goodson for more money was not enough.Īnnouncer Gene Wood hosed the show for the next two seasons. In a 2007 Internet radio interview, Narz finally explained that the show's budget did not include his personal travel expenses Narz had to pay for his travels and the cost of airline fair between his Los Angeles home and Montreal became prohibitive. Jack Narz left the show in 1972 at the time, he made no announcement and gave no reason for his departure. Towards the end of Narz's tenure as host, stunts would be replaced in the second half of the show with the celebrity playing a game of intuition with the couples who would play for a cash prize that was divided among them. The couples could win $50 if they guessed correctly whether the star could "Beat the Clock" or vice versa. Anywhere from $10 to $50 would be awarded for each time the stunt could be completed in the time remaining.Īt some point during the show, the celebrity would perform a "Solo Stunt". In addition, if a couple completed a stunt in less than half the time, the remaining time would be used for awarding a cash bonus. The couple would agree on a letter, select it and the winnings would be revealed. Doing so successfully won them a pick from a "cash board" with " BEAT THE CLOCK" spelled out on three levels, each letter concealing a money amount either $25 (4), $50 (5), $100 (2) or $200. The pits will also refill boost and on some tracks it is actually faster to boost through the pit at the end into the finish. Two couples, aided by a weekly celebrity guest, attempted to complete various stunts within a certain time limit, with the maximum possible time being 60 seconds (one minute). Because of this, be sure to use the pit on each preparation hot lap. Any fragments of health missing will slow down your car's speed. Remember to keep your health at full when hot-lapping. Keep in mind that there are uphill sections as well on tracks that should take priority over normal straights. Once you have utilized the boost on every turn of a lap, it is okay to start bursting your boost on the straights of a track. Where as straights on a track (where you are at ETS) should take the lowest priority. Coming out of turns (areas of a track where you are at minimal speed) should take the highest priority. So you'll have to prioritize where the best places are to use your boost. On the majority of the tracks, you won't be able to use this method the entire time. Because of this, it is better to use your boost in squeezed single fragment bursts throughout the track rather than holding the boost for any extended duration of time.Īs soon as you see your top speed begin to drop below the BTS, you should use a single fragment burst of boost to reach the BTS again. You reach your BTS after using a single fragment of burst, and for a brief period of time after letting go of your boost you will still remain at your BTS. I will refer to the boost top speed as "BTS" and the engine top speed as "ETS". When using boost, you will cap out at a top speed that is faster than the top speed attainable with just your engine speed. When going for fast lap times, it's important to learn how to use your boost efficiently. This means that there are 216 gold medals to obtain in total. To unlock this achievement you must complete all six variations of all nine tracks with all four car classes with a gold medal lap time. There are also four different car classes: n-Dura, Evo GT, Protech, and Apex. And all of those variations have a reverse version. There are currently nine tracks in the game and each track has a long, shortcut(s), and short variation.
